IF STREETS REMEMBER

If streets remember

When we pass this way
or that,
Do the streets remember?
If we walk the same stretch
your long strides outpacing mine,
Will cold grey slabs hold an imprint?
Will that gust of breeze take just a little of you
or me
And hold it there like a treasure
-waiting?
Will that tree remember my gaze
and take a photograph of blue eyes
So that when you pass
It can dance its leaves into a remembering?
If I stand in the place where we kissed and loved,
Will the reedy borders drink in my tears
and keep them for you to inhale
The next time you pass?
It’s still the same moon,
The same world.
The same waters.
I hope they remember us greedily.
